Classic & Vintage cars have character that few modern cars can equal. Modern cars are extremely safe, reliable and fuel-efficient. Yet in our opinion not many of them offer the same thrill and excitement as a classic, and none of them have the history that makes a classic car truly special. In this section we will profile many of the world´s most exciting classics.
Aston Martin DB4/5/6
The Aston Martin DB4/5/6, are probably the most influential Aston Martin models ever made. Their style and the strategy have echoed down the years and still has a real bearing on the products made by the very different Aston Martin Company of today. David Brown, the owner had a great desire to compete with the best that Ferrari could offer. That meant trying to build a car styled by the most innovative designers in the world, and offering performance levels far greater than anything Aston Martin had produced before.
Tadek Marek, the Polish engineer, came to Aston Martin and designed a new 3.7 – Litre six-cylinder engine, while Aston chassis engineer Harold Beech created a new steel chassis in consultation with the Carrozzeria Touring styling house. Touring penned a lithe and elegant fastback body to be built using their “ Superleggera” construction method where aluminium panels are supported by a lightweight tubular framework.
The DB4, was launched in 1958 at the London Motor Show. Though the early cars had lubrication problems the DB4 was a fantastic success, selling faster than any other Aston. When the fixed-head coupe was in production a drop head was developed, and customers were able to specify more powerful “Special Series” engines with three twin – choke Weber carburettors in place of the usual SUs. In the year 1962 the convertible has been introduced where 74 convertibles have been manufactured. The DB4 reaches the speed of 60 mph in 9.3 seconds and the top speed is about 139.3 mph and the cost of the car is about £3967.
